For the first time a Government Minister has admitted that the new gambling laws in the UK could cause a rise in Gambling addictions.
In an interview that aired earlier in the week the Sports Minister said that the new legislation could lead to a rise in problem gambling, but he also said that should this happen the government is capable of taking care of the problem.
Last year the UK passed the
Gambling Act which relaxed regulations on the gambling industry that will allow the first Vegas Style Super Casino to be built in the UK, the winner of the contract will be announced next week, but the list has been narrowed down from dozens to seven.
Conservative spokesmen said he was shocked at the admission that it could lead to a rise in gambling problems after all the assurances from the culture secretary to the opposite. “This admission completely undermines the supposed aims of the gambling legislation” he told a newspaper.
But a spokesman for the Department of Culture said that his “Admission” was just a acknowledgment that there is the possibility of a rise in gambling problems. >
Information that was leaked to a local paper showed that 90 new casinos have been granted operating licenses in the past 2 years which in terms of floor space is the same as 10 super casinos, which is the opposite of what the government originally said, that the number would be kept very low.
